How to Restrict Certain Apps From Being Downloaded From Android Market

Android Market is growing very fast, and it has its negative sides, too, because more apps mean more threats. Plus, it becomes more difficult to control the market. In this case, probably, the most comfortable and acceptable app market is App Store, but we, Android lovers, want the Android Market not to yield to Apple’s one.

So before Google comes up with a new way to check the quality of the apps from the market and to remove the bad ones, let’s see how we can restrict certain apps from being downloaded from the Android Market.

Each app has a limitation on who can download it. Generally, there are the following groups of users:

  • Everyone
  • Low maturity
  • Medium maturity
  • High maturity

So if you want to block downloading apps from any group of this list, go to Menu>Settings, choose the appropriate level of app and set a PIN password. Now every time the device owner wants to download a certain app he/she is not allowed, he/she will be asked to type the PIN password, which of course, you haven’t told him/her.

This doesn’t mean the app won’t be shown in the phone, no. But most likely is not necessary at all. The fact is the user won’t be able to download it.

Google Goggles Gets Updated

Google Goggles — an application that allows to search the web with the help of pics — is now getting a new update. The newest 1.6 version of it will bring in several improvements for Android handsets’ cameras. This is one of the major updates of the application after the personal data was added.

The new version of the application will make the camera integration with the web much better. So from now on it will allow to automatically scan all of the shots taken by the camera application of the handset. How does it work? While the scanning process is continued in the background, the users will get various notifications every time a landmark, a painting or an object is identified.

By the way, you always have a chance to share the acquired information with your friends. You just need to head to the Goggles application and share your search history.

The application is available for all Android handsets running Android 2.1 and higher, and it’s obvious that you don’t have to pay for it as the developer apps are always free of charge. So all you need to do is to get the newest version of the application from Android Market or update the current version of Google Goggles on your smartphone — go Settings -> Search for Camera — and that’s it.

Google Voice App for Android Updated

Most of Google Voice users have been facing different problems with the application. Still Google introduced only one update in the past few months and it was just a minor update dealing with the ecological power management. This time we finally face a software update fixing the bugs of the application.

Google Voice users should be familiar with the double-play issue (it’s when you need to press “play” twice to play your voicemails). The message stops shortly after you start to listen to it. With the newest 0.4.2.34 version of Google Voice, the second tap will not be required.

Another major fix is going to deal with the issue of delaying Android notifications, so now you will get them right on time.

The rest of the features of the update include:

  • Does not require data connectivity for making calls to all numbers you previously called
  • Warns you when no data connectivity before you compose/send text messages
  • Fix for notifications delays for SMS and voicemails

The Google Voice app for Android is designed to replace Sprint’s voicemail, becoming a leading voicemail provider for Android devices. It allows to call your friends abroad using your Google number and to send free text messages, too.

The newest version of the application can be found in Android Market. It’s available only for the U.S. customers.
