Android 2.0, codenamed “Donut” in the making

The craze around the Android 1.5 cupcake is still ablaze. Many people are still a couple of days away from even getting the Cupcake update. And today, we have got some news about another update, Android 2.0 aka “Donut”.

It seems, Google is already working on the next update of Android, codenamed “Donut”.

In an open discussion forum in Google groups, Mike Lockwood talked about a new Kernel being developed, named “Donut”. There are no other reports or details about the features that would come with Donut.

Android Framework Engineer Dianne Hackborn said that a detailed roadmap and feature list on Donut is not yet available due to concerns about “implied commitments that people are then going to base device schedules around when we are not confident enough about them.”

Some of the vital features missing from Android 1.0 was corrected with Android 1.5. Now, let us wait and see what Android 2.0 has to offer.

Pdair leather case : the safest way to carry your T-Mobile G1

A couple of days back, I laid my hands on the leather case for my T-Mobile G1. It has got the perfect openings.

Here’s a picture of my phone lying inside the leather case :

The following image shows how the device looks from the front, while safely fitted inside the case. And also notice, how conveniently you can access the call answer and reject buttons, the back button, the home button and the menu button :

The next picture shows the opening for the volume button :

The next image shows you the easy accessibility of the camera button, while the phone is resting inside the case :

A strap is given at the top, to hold the keyboard in its place, after the screen has been slided up :

In my honest opinion, investing in a good case, like this one from pdair, is a must for any individual who really loves his gadget and wants to protect it. Since the day I have safely preserved my phone in the case, I never felt the need to take it out, for any functionality.

I would say, its worth the investment as it’s of great quality and great value.

A Sneak Peak at JesusFreke’s Android 1.5 Cupcake

The most awaited JesusFreke’s Android 1.5 cupcake, was released a couple of days back.

According to Jesus Freke, the important changes/additions made are :

  • I’m now including a much better Superuser app, courtesy of zinx
  • I’ve rebuilt the kernel and enabled netfilter support, to allow tethering. I recommend aNetShare
  • You can see/download both paid and protected apps in the market
  • Luke’s multitouch kernel patch and browser patch have been ported to the .27 kernel and 1.5 browser.
  • Support for the “apps to sdcard” hack. There’s not a separate “apps to sdcard” build. You can use the same build whether you are doing apps to sdcard or not. Thanks to haykuro for explaining how he’s done this in his images, so I can make my builds compatible. See here for a tutorial on setting this up.
  • I’m not including a recovery image in this build. I ran into some snags getting all of the recovery features to work with the 1.5 recovery image, so I’ll forgo that for now. If you don’t have a spiffy recovery image yet, I’ve packaged up the most recent recovery image from JFv1.43 as a separate update.

Here are a few screenshots showing Android 1.5 running :
