New Android Trojan Records Phone Conversations!

As an open-source platform, Android is vulnerable to malicious software and apps. A couple of months ago more than 70 types of malicious apps were found by Kaspersky Lab, then other two dozens of infected apps were found on Android Market, later another dangerous Trojan was found in Android apps and then new malware called DroidKungFu was discovered in many smartphones running Android 2.2 or the earlier versions.

Now a new threat for Android smartphones has appeared. It’s a Trojan app that can record your phone conversations and save them in your microSD card.

Previous infected apps could access your smartphone’s call log and see whom you called and who called you, but none could get access to your conversations. And this new Trojan is really scary – it records your conversations in “.amr” format and can even send them to the computer of its maker, and you won’t even know about it.

This Trojan disguises itself as an ordinary Android app. You download and install it – and it starts doing its dirty work! So if you don’t want anyone to be able to listen to your phone conversations, be careful when downloading third-party apps from unofficial sources. Better use trusted sources and download only those apps that are created by well-known developers. Besides, don’t forget to have a look at the permissions requested by the apps you’re installing.

Say Hello to New Android Market 3.0.27!

A few weeks ago a new Android Market (version 3.0.26) with updated movie and book rentals and a number of other improvements was leaked. The user interface in the leaked version was also different, as if it was designed for Honeycomb or even for the upcoming Ice-Cream Sandwich.

That time we couldn’t find anyone who actually received that update, but now the next (3.0.27) version of Android Market is being rolled out, and at least the guys from Android Community have already upgraded the Android Market on their devices running Android 2.2. Here’s what they write:

“I manually installed the original leak on another phone and it was almost instantly upgraded without notice or user action to 3.0.27 so this is most likely the official version.”

The update isn’t being rolled out as fast as we would like it to, but if you don’t want to wait any longer, you can install in manually. Don’t hesitate to follow this link to download it!

Android is Second Popular OS in UK

The number of smartphone users is increasing in the UK: If back in 2010 only 27 percent of mobile users had smartphones, now two time more people own smartphones — 42 percent.

The number of Android fans in the world is also increasing, and the UK is no exception. Only a year ago there weren’t many people who had Android smartphones in the UK, but now Google’s platform has grabbed 26.7 percent of the OS market in the UK, showing a ridiculously huge 634 percent increase. So now Android is the second popular OS in the UK, while the first place belongs to Apple’s iOS (27.1 percent).

In May 2010 Nokia’s Symbian was the most popular OS in the UK, but things change, and now Symbian has fallen to the third place with a 10 percent market share decrease (only 22.5 percent now). As for the other platforms, RIM’s OS is on the fourth place, even though its market share had a 59 percent increase, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone had a 32 percent decrease, so it’s only the fifth now.

The difference between iOS and Android is tiny now – only 0.4 percent, and we think very soon Android will gain more users and will become the most popular OS in the UK, leaving iOS and Symbian far behind.

Google Maps for Android Gets New 3D Buildings

In the end of the last year the new Google Maps 5.0 were released for Android and made a real revolution in the world of mobile maps by giving the users the opportunity to rotate and zoom in/out the 3D maps. Some time ago you could have a look at the 3D buildings in New York, Zurich, Milan and many other cities, and now Google has added 18 more cities, including London, Paris, Barcelona, Stockholm, Lisbon, Singapore, Boulder and 11 major cities in South Africa.

You don’t need to update your Google Maps for Android app to get access to the new 3D cities. The 3D view will appear when you just browse one of these 18 cities on your Android smartphone (the OS version must be at least 2.0).

Less than a couple of months ago Google added another interesting feature to its Maps — the Live Transit that is available in six cities (Boston, Portland (Oregon), San Diego, San Francisco, Madrid and Turin) and informs you about the public transport in those areas.

It seems like Google Maps is in the center of Google’s attention, so let’s hope more and more goodies and useful updates will come soon.

Google Now Activates 550,000 Android Devices Daily

Only a couple of weeks ago we wrote that Google activated 500,000 Android devices daily, and now Google CEO Larry Page announced during Google Q2 2011 conference call that the number of Android smartphone activations has grown to 550,000 daily!

According to Google’s officials, there are now over 400 devices based on Android worldwide and the number of subscribers is more than 135 million.

So Android already dominates on the smartphone market and beats even Apple with its iOS. However, the situation is not the same with the app market where Apple still manages to dominate: While the Android Market can boast only 6 billion downloads and 250,000 applications, the App Store offers 425,000 applications and has 15 billion downloads.

Android has been the leader in the smartphone market in the U.S. and even worldwide for several quarters already, and the fact that more and more Android devices are activated daily and weekly makes me think that Google’s OS will continue leading the market, at least in the nearest future. And most likely very soon the Android Market will catch up to Apple’s App Store, too.
