Oracle Claims Google Earns 10 Million on its Patent

As Oracle lawsuit against Android continues, parties are now in the stage when even a single victory will be welcomed. Take for example the dates of court trials. And for this date Oracle and Google have their own considerations. Android explains it wants a later date since it is just busy now, and Oracle wants to get the continuation of trial to take place sooner.

The lawsuit concerns the use of Java by Google, which Oracle says is illegal. The court decided to set the next trial date on March 23. Oracle wants to bring the date 19 day closer. This company justifies its wish by the fact that Google generates millions of revenue by using an Oracle patented technology. Here is what Oracle says, “Each day’s worth of activations likely generates approximately 10 million USD in annual mobile advertising revenue for Google. This revenue does not even include all the other value Android generates for Google, ranging from Android Market revenue, to other Android-related services, to ensuring that Google will not be locked out of the mobile business, to lucrative relationships with manufacturers of myriad devices on which Android can and does run, to the inordinately valuable access Android provides to customers for its new social network service, Google+.”

It is clear Google will not be casting aside Java because of this trial, and maybe Oracle just wants some cash from that 10 million.

74 Percent of Americans Own Google or Apple Device

A brilliant image of what is happening in the mobile world in the US was given through a survey organized by Yankee Group, a market research company. The latter has asked 15,000 respondents in the US to find out their preferences related to smartphone brands. The results can be shocking especially for those manufacturers who are standing at the brim of disappearance from the market.

Yankee Group survey thus revealed the 74 percent of all US smartphone potential buyers will opt for either Android or Apple iPhone device. The 39 percent of those asked said they will go for Android OS handsets, and the 25 percent – for the iPhone. Yes, but what about the others? It should be noted that after these two, RIM’s BlackBerry got the third place. The others were spread with 9 percent wanting a Windows Phone device and 2 – Symbian OS (still alive?). The survey further disclosed that nearly half of US phone users already own a smartphone, and the 58 percent said they are going to change their ordinary handset with a smartphone in the near future.

This means that manufacturers, say like HTC, need more innovation and marketing genius to come close to Google and Apple, and the war for the tiny percent of customers in the US will be waged even more fiercely. Katie Lewis, an analyst at Yankee Group expressed this in this way, “Opportunities within the smartphone market abound, but we’ve reached a critical point where graves could be dug for several OS vendors, decisions made in the next three years are likely to seal the fate, good or bad, of many OSs. Now is the time for these vendors to fight for survival.” I think no further comment is needed.

Google+ can Take Away Facebook’s Glory

Facebook owners should be really concerned now as Google+ accelerates its user collecting capacity. Beginning in July, Google+ reportedly has 62 million users now. About 24 percent of this number registered this month. Now Los Angeles Times writes that with 625,000 daily user subscriptions, that number can reach 400 million before the end of next year.

Here is how the Google+ user growth occurred in time:

  • July 13 – 10 million
  • August 1 – 20.5 million
  • September 1 – 24.7 million
  • October 1 – 38 million
  • November 1 – 43 million
  • December 1 – 50 million

Facebook has about 800 million users and that number is growing. But now many Facebook users register also with Google+ and use them both for various purposes. It is not excluded though that in time the usage balance may shift to Google+ considering its sophisticated marketing techniques of attracting new users. In addition Google fully uses its popular Android operating system to help register Google+ accounts.

Google Activates 700.000 Devices Daily

Though Google’s closest partners don’t feel that good at the moment because of patent lawsuits and decreased sales numbers, it doesn’t prevent Google from ensuring record daily activations. Google’s Andy Rubin said they are activating 700.000 Android devices daily and it’s not a limit.

At the end of June, the tech giant announced there are 500.000 daily activations. But a month later this number was changed to 550.000. Moreover, the company’s official announcement claimed they reached 100 million activations worldwide. However, this record was broken in November, when the same Mr. Rubin confirmed the news there were 200 million activated devices in the whole world.

This means Google shows an unprecedented growth rate and has doubled this indicator during six months. The simplest calculations show Google will reach 250 million activation very soon. This was even confirmed by Rubin who posted on his Google+ account.

Honestly I have no idea how many devices in the world run other operating systems, but taking into account how “young” Android is, these numbers are just shocking.

British Telecom Sues Google Over Patents

We are getting somehow accustomed to legal battles, which are taking place between major smartphone manufacturers. These legal cases primarily concern patent issues. Google with its most successful Android OS is particularly in the center of attention these days as it acquired a rather serious opponent – British Telecom (BT). The latter sued Google in the US state of Delaware for infringement of what BT says its key patents. BT states its patents were illegally used by Google in such favorite applications as Google Maps, Google Music, Android Market apps and location oriented advertising system.

Now BT says it suffered billions of dollars in damages for this infringement and if it wins over Google in the court, then Google can be made to pay a huge compensation. This really complicates Google’s affairs, for it had other rather hard cases against it going on the European continent from such companies as Oracle, Microsoft, eBay, plus Apple in the US.

But Google is not the company to surrender that soon, it says BT’s accusations are without merit, and they will vigorously defend against it. With its Android OS based handsets making more than 40 percent of smartphone sales in the world and more than 500,000 worldwide daily activations of an Android device, the company feels it is strong enough to battle such a “giant” as BT.
