Android powered ‘OPhone’ to be launched in China

China has emerged as the world’s largest wireless market. What could be a better opportunity for HTC and Android ? That’s the reason, HTC is planning to launch the latest Android powered device, HTC Magic, but by a different name, the OPhone, in China, as per a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The phone will be provided by the career, China Mobile and will have customized software from the mobile career (read it as Open Mobile System, the name for China Mobile’s customized version of Google’s mobile operating system).

The price of the device has not been confirmed yet. But, the WSJ suggests the price would be somewhere around 5,000 yuan, or about $730. The OPhone will probably be launched in China next month.

This launch will probably pave the way for Android to explore the other Asian markets. HTC is hoping to double its sales in China this year. May be, Android will make HTC’s dreams come true. And, the Asian customers, who have been anxiously waiting to get a hold of the Android devices have some reason to rejoice.

It remains to see how well these two devices are able to capture the Taiwanese market. It would be interesting to see how well the Magic is accepted in the Asian market, as Magic has a capacitive screen and there is no hardware keyboard to input the text. And, it is difficult to type in Asian characters (Chinese, Taiwanese, etc.) on the capacitive screen. Perhaps, that’s the major reason that the devices with resistive screen are still ruling the Asian market.

HTC Magic available in spain

HTC Magic has been officially launched in Spain, by Vodafone. It came as a surprise package, as its been released almost a week prior to the possible date of its release, 5th May. The phone is available in online stores of the carrier. But, will be available in the retail stores starting next week. The price starts from 19 pounds.

Magic comes with a 3.2″ HVGA (320*480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen display, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, HSPA and WIFI b/g. It also sports a 3.2 MP camera. It has 512 MB internal memory.

Just like the dream, it comes with the Google suite of applications, like Gmail, internet browser, Android Market, Gtalk, Youtube, etc.

The icing on the cake is, I feel, the 512 MB ROM. Also, it does not have a keyboard. So, this makes the device comparatively lighter.
