Over 500,000 Android Devices Activated Every Day

During the I/O Event that took place in the beginning of May, Google announced that about 400,000 Android devices were activated daily. Less than two months have passed since that announcement, and now Andy Rubin, Google’s vice president of engineering and the one responsible for the Android platform, says the number of daily activated Android devices has grown to 500,000.

“There are now 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w,” reads his recent tweet.

According to IDC, not so long ago Android lost a bit of its market share (for the first time since 2009), but not because it had low sales or something. Just the iPhone4 from Verizon was really popular and had great sales, grabbing a bigger market share. But anyway, Android devices are still selling well, and besides, Android is the most popular platform among developers at the moment – 67 percent of them create apps and software for Google’s OS, and I guess  this fact is unlikely to change in the nearest future.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t announce how many iPhone devices are activated every day, so it’s rather difficult to compare Apple and Google. But we know that Apple activated 18.1 million devices in the second quarter of this year (January-March), and about 180 million iPhones during a year (March 2010-March 2011). 180 million/365 days = about 295.890,4. So it seems like less than 300,000 iPhones running iOS are activated by Apple daily.

But remember, it’s not really correct to compare Apple’s iOS with Google’s Android, since Apple sells only one single smartphone based on iOS, and there are many, many manufacturers (Motorola and HTC are perhaps the biggest ones among them) that develop and sell Android-based smartphones.

HTC Glamor – Android-Based Smartphone for Women

In May HTC announced it was going to release the Android-based Bliss – the first HTC smartphone designed especially for women. The device was rumored to have some wallpapers, apps and accessories created for ladies.

Today I learned about a new HTC device – the HTC Glamor – which was leaked not so long ago and is also known as a device designed for women. Is the HTC Glamor the same HTC Bliss? We can’t be sure about this, since we hadn’t seen any pictures of the HTC Bliss, so we have no idea what the device looked like. We just knew it was going to be dark green (not really feminine, heh?), and the new HTC Glamor (if we believe the leaked pic) has three versions – bright pink, blue and yellow. Besides, there were rumors that the HTC Bliss was going to look like the Desire S and the Desire Z, but the new HTC Glamor looks like the HTC Incredible S and the HTC Sensation.

Nothing was known about the specs of the HTC Bliss, and nothing is known about the HTC Glamor for now. We only know both run Android, and the HTC Bliss will have the famous HTC Sense UI (version 2.5 or 3.0), and we hope the Glamorous smartphone by HTC will also include this cool UI.

I guess the HTC Bliss and the HTC Glamor are two different smartphones after all, both aimed at women (which is very good, since most of HTC’s smartphones are kind of too “masculine”). Perhaps the dark green HTC Bliss will find more mature and “serious” buyers, and the bright HTC Glamor will look very good in the hands of young ladies.

AT&T on works to launch HTC Fiesta

A couple of months back, there had been reports that Google plans to launch 15-20 Android devices by the end of this year. Also, there were reports that 50% of HTC phones releasing next year, would come loaded with Android. Both these news seem to be fruitifying now. Almost every day, news of some or the other Android device in the making crops up. Now, according to AndroidGuys, AT&T is working on an Android-powered device, the HTC Fiesta.

The speculated specs of the device are :

  • ARM11 Processor
  • Phone Keypad
  • 240×320 Display
  • MIDI, AAC, MP3, 3GP, OGG.

Having a look at the specs, it makes me suppose that this would be a low-end device, targeting the masses. Will it have touch screen ? And, will it have features like inbuilt GPS ? Possible! Moreover, we have no news about the pricing or the release date of the device.

So, are you already eyeing this device ? Just stay glued to GAndroidmix and we will keep you abreast with any further details regarding the phone.

If you are a regular at xda-developers, you would be knowing that some time back in April, a senior member had posted “I work for a wireless developer firm and I have just received word from the US carrier (cannot disclose who yet) that the release date for the HTC Hero (Android) is October 11th 2009.” Now, that was amazing. But, the announcement seems to be fruitifying now. Have a look at the picture below :
