74 Percent of Americans Own Google or Apple Device

A brilliant image of what is happening in the mobile world in the US was given through a survey organized by Yankee Group, a market research company. The latter has asked 15,000 respondents in the US to find out their preferences related to smartphone brands. The results can be shocking especially for those manufacturers who are standing at the brim of disappearance from the market.

Yankee Group survey thus revealed the 74 percent of all US smartphone potential buyers will opt for either Android or Apple iPhone device. The 39 percent of those asked said they will go for Android OS handsets, and the 25 percent – for the iPhone. Yes, but what about the others? It should be noted that after these two, RIM’s BlackBerry got the third place. The others were spread with 9 percent wanting a Windows Phone device and 2 – Symbian OS (still alive?). The survey further disclosed that nearly half of US phone users already own a smartphone, and the 58 percent said they are going to change their ordinary handset with a smartphone in the near future.

This means that manufacturers, say like HTC, need more innovation and marketing genius to come close to Google and Apple, and the war for the tiny percent of customers in the US will be waged even more fiercely. Katie Lewis, an analyst at Yankee Group expressed this in this way, “Opportunities within the smartphone market abound, but we’ve reached a critical point where graves could be dug for several OS vendors, decisions made in the next three years are likely to seal the fate, good or bad, of many OSs. Now is the time for these vendors to fight for survival.” I think no further comment is needed.

Android is the Second in the European Market

The fact Android is growing very fast is not a secret, but no one could imagine that Google’s operating system will show such a progress in a year. I am speaking about the results of the research made by ComScore. According to it, Android devices now account for nearly 22 percent of all smartphones in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. This number makes Android the second popular OS in Europe after Symbian, leaving iOS behind.

During a year everything has changed in these 5 countries, and if last year Symbian was nearly in half handsets in the EU, now it has only 37.8 percent of them. Moreover, last year only 6 percent of all smartphones in those five European markets ran Android, and now their number has grown more than 3.5 times!

However, things can change soon, because the iPhone 5 is going to be launched in October. It’ll shake the whole smartphone market for sure…

Android is Second Popular OS in UK

The number of smartphone users is increasing in the UK: If back in 2010 only 27 percent of mobile users had smartphones, now two time more people own smartphones — 42 percent.

The number of Android fans in the world is also increasing, and the UK is no exception. Only a year ago there weren’t many people who had Android smartphones in the UK, but now Google’s platform has grabbed 26.7 percent of the OS market in the UK, showing a ridiculously huge 634 percent increase. So now Android is the second popular OS in the UK, while the first place belongs to Apple’s iOS (27.1 percent).

In May 2010 Nokia’s Symbian was the most popular OS in the UK, but things change, and now Symbian has fallen to the third place with a 10 percent market share decrease (only 22.5 percent now). As for the other platforms, RIM’s OS is on the fourth place, even though its market share had a 59 percent increase, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone had a 32 percent decrease, so it’s only the fifth now.

The difference between iOS and Android is tiny now – only 0.4 percent, and we think very soon Android will gain more users and will become the most popular OS in the UK, leaving iOS and Symbian far behind.

Android Is the Most Popular Platform among Developers

VisionMobile – a market analysis and strategy company – has introduced very interesting statistics. According to their research, in which 850 developers took part, Android is the most popular platform among the developers – 67 percent of the developers all over the world are working with it.

Apple’s iOS is in the second place — according to the same research, 59 percent of developers work with it. Both Android and iOS showed a considerable increase of about 10 percent (59 percent of developers worked with Android and 50 percent worked with iOS in 2010).

The interest of the developers in Symbian has deceased this year. 46 percent of them worked with this OS back in 2010, and only 38 percent are working with it this year. As for Windows Phone, the interest towards it has also decreased from 39 percent to 36 percent.

The least popular system is Flash or Flash Lite – only 34 percent of developers work with it, though the number has grown since 2010 (when it was only 22 percent). When the developers were asked about the platforms they are planning to use in the future, 35 percent mentioned Android, so Google’s OS is still expected to be the most popular one among developers. However, iOS goes on the fourth place with only 27 percent of developers interested in it. To our great surprise, Windows Phone was the second – 32 percent of developers said they are planning to start working with it.
