What to Expect from Jelly Bean

Though we’ll see what features Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will bring in a few hours, it would do no harm to take a quick look at the rumored features, before Google I/O takes place. Initially Jelly Bean was rumored to be the codename of Android 5.0 but it later became known we will be waiting for the fifth generation of Google’s mobile operating system too long. Anyway, the software version doesn’t matter at the moment because we are more interested in the changelog than it in the version number.

Google must first take into consideration the changes we saw in Android 4.0 UI must be kept, and if the company wants to change something they must be limited to subtle refinements.

Second, Google must make Chrome as the default browser instead of standard Android browser. This can be accepted in different ways because Chrome still doesn’t support for Flash Player, but on the other hand, Chrome is way faster on Android than the current browser.

Third, we’d like to see file manager in Jelly Bean because users have had to download one from Google Play, if any of the manufacturers did not have it pre-installed it on its devices. Now seems this won’t be a problem anymore.

Fourth, Google is going to announce its own tablet, and starting from ICS we saw the company more focuses on tablet-centric software. So we hope Jelly Bean will disperse these thoughts, and the newer software will come to update our phones as well.

Fifth, we are more than sure Google will launch its own voice assistant to stay in the race and not to allow Apple and Windows Phone 8 to take prevalence over it.

Sixth, though we don’t know how Google will improve its virtual keyboard, it must be done. And if rumors as regarding an easier way to switch between languages and integration with the new voice assistant prove correct, then we’ll be pleased.

A Sneak Peak at JesusFreke’s Android 1.5 Cupcake

The most awaited JesusFreke’s Android 1.5 cupcake, was released a couple of days back.

According to Jesus Freke, the important changes/additions made are :

  • I’m now including a much better Superuser app, courtesy of zinx
  • I’ve rebuilt the kernel and enabled netfilter support, to allow tethering. I recommend aNetShare
  • You can see/download both paid and protected apps in the market
  • Luke’s multitouch kernel patch and browser patch have been ported to the .27 kernel and 1.5 browser.
  • Support for the “apps to sdcard” hack. There’s not a separate “apps to sdcard” build. You can use the same build whether you are doing apps to sdcard or not. Thanks to haykuro for explaining how he’s done this in his images, so I can make my builds compatible. See here for a tutorial on setting this up.
  • I’m not including a recovery image in this build. I ran into some snags getting all of the recovery features to work with the 1.5 recovery image, so I’ll forgo that for now. If you don’t have a spiffy recovery image yet, I’ve packaged up the most recent recovery image from JFv1.43 as a separate update.

Here are a few screenshots showing Android 1.5 running :
